CHAPTER V
Betrayal
I BARELY HAD TIME TO change my clothes before a servant girl came looking for me. She kept her eyes down, her whole posture humble as she spoke.
âThe King summons you, Milady,â she said.
Ares and I had kept a low profile as we returned to the castle, but it seemed the king had been keeping an eye out for us. The blood froze in my veins. If he wanted to see me right away, this couldnât be good.
The servant girl led me down the stairs and through the main castle towards the throne room. It was a majestic space, just like the halls and galleries of the ancient castle inside Doomsday Mountain, only far brighter and more opulent with its amenities and décor. A throne made of what appeared to be golden swords stood on a high dais, daylight flooding in from the tall windows to both sides, and bathing it in sunrays. A hall so big that the echo of my footsteps were lost as I walked towards the throne, and so filled with gold and gems that it could blind you if you caught the daylight.
So this was it.
This was the place from where Celestia was ruled.
âSo,â Garielâs voice boomed from somewhere where I couldnât see him. âOnce you have your aristocratic title, you intend to marry the Scorpio Beast.â
My head snapped around several times until I saw him emerge from a chamber I hadnât noticed behind the throne, and slump into it with a goblet in one hand, draping one leg over the throneâs arm.
âIt is the plan,â I said calmly, keeping my back stiff, and all expression rom my face.
âTell me, Vyper, how did this...alliance come to be? And donât even try to tell me itâs a love story. Iâve done my research. The beast had you give yourself over to him a few months ago, in exchange for your little brotherâs freedom. Now, I gather, he has both of your brothers under his control.â
I pressed my lips together as I balled and released my fists by my side, hiding them in the pale blue folds of my dress.
âIâm not sure what you want to hear.â
âThe truth.â
âAres and I...weâre for real.â
Gariel burst into laughter, the kind that could make the hairs stand on anyone who was subject to his power.
âAnd you expect me to believe that? Who in their right mind would be with a monster?â
Anger clenched my jaw tighter. âI know many women of this kingdom who would gladly share his bed.â
âOh yes, he can be compelling, but in the long run?â He sipped from his gobbled, licking his lips afterwards and relaxing broadly in his throne. âMany women have the fantasy of fucking a beast, and I know he banked on that with some in Celestia.â Mean eyes fell on me. âIâm sure youâre well aware of that, too.â
âYour Highness, forgive me, but I donât understand why you summoned me here.â
âOh, weâre getting there. But, first of all, I would have you call me Your Grace.
